ETERNAL INFLUENCE – Ps Craig Clark
In the fullness of daily life, it can be easy to overlook intentionally living with an eternal perspective. Weekly schedules, family, and work often rest at the forefront of our minds and leave us with a limited room for what God is wanting to do though us to impact others with an eternal influence. When we have a clear perspective of eternity it positions us to love people passionately, serve people wholeheartedly, and to always be ready to share how Jesus has changed our life. It also inspires us to be fishers of (wo)men!
Scripture
Matthew 4:18 As Jesus was walking beside the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fisherman. “Come follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.
Context: Have you ever wondered why Peter and Andrew left everything so easily to follow Jesus?
Every Hebrew boy longed to be a rabbi, it was the highest calling, the coolest thing to do – it’s kind of like how in Australia, so many boys grow up wanting to play footy. But how many actually get to play for the AFL one day? – such a small percent! Every Hebrew boy wanted to be a rabbi, but at some point, 99% of them were told: ‘I’m sorry – you just don’t have what it takes to be in ministry’. Only the best, of the best made it, and here’s the process of how they could become a rabbi, and why so many didn’t make it, and ended up working in the family business – just like what Peter & Andrew were up to when Jesus walked by.
First, you had to memorise Leviticus by the age of six years old, and not every home had scripture; so they would learn scripture though what others shared – so you had to memorise Leviticus based on your father’s memorisation of Leviticus, and him quoting it to you.
If you memorised Leviticus then you graduated; but when you were 6, you graduated to what was called the Beit Sefer, which is Hebrew for ‘The School of The Book’. Beit Sefer lasted from 6-12 years old, and in those years, you would have to memorise the whole Torah: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy – word for word, the whole thing. When they were 12 years old, they graduated from the Beit Sefer by having a Torah exam, with the teachers of the law that day. They weren’t graded on whether they knew the answers; but on whether they asked the right questions.
It says in Luke, that when Jesus was 12 years old, He was amazing the teachers of the law with His questions.
Hebrew scholars were not noted for their answers – they were noted for their ability to keep the discussion about God going longer. So, if they amazed the teachers of the law with their questions, they graduated into what was called the Beit Talmud, which means ‘The School of Disciples’. Talmud is the word for disciple; it’s like discipleship school.
If you didn’t amaze the teachers of the law with your questions, you were told ‘I’m sorry – you’re unfit to be a rabbi; now go back and earn a living at your family trade’.
But the best, of the best – the ones that were amazing teachers of the law with their questions, they graduated to the Beit Talmud.
The Beit Talmud was 18 years long, from ages of 12- 30, in five stages. That is why scripture says Jesus disappeared from 12 to 30. He was in the Beit Talmud. The final stage to become a rabbi.
So, it was through this very long & demanding process that every Hebrew boy would dream of becoming a rabbi, but only 1% would make it to the end – like Jesus did. So, the community would have known this about Jesus, and it makes complete sense that Peter, Andrew and all the disciples dropped everything to become disciples of Jesus – he was their second chance at every little Hebrew boy’s dream!
Being a follower of Jesus means that we ourselves are to help influence others to follow Jesus. This is the eternal plan that Jesus had all along; that through each one of us, he would reach an entire lost and broken world with the reality of the gospel! Here are 3 thoughts to inspire us to keep shining bright in our area of influence.
.
LOVE ENOUGH
God loved us so much that He sent His son to make a way for us to be reconciled to Him John 3:16. With that in mind, do we love others enough to live our life in a way that creates opportunity for others to be reconciled to God?
In fact, we could say, that the way we love others reflects how we love God – we can’t love one without loving the other Matthew 22:36-40. We may not always get it right! But it’s a great question to ask ourselves, and to aspire to grow our capacity in our ability to love others well as we journey with Jesus.
In fact, it is the power of God in us and working through us that gives us the desire and the ability to love people and to do His will Philippians 2:13. It is Gods will that we would be people that make room to see others the way He sees them, to stop and listen to the one, to stop and pray with others in need, to stop and be aware of what God is wanting to do in the lives of others around us. One thing we know for sure is that God is always up to something in the hearts of people and when we are close to Him, we can be in the flow of what He’s wanting to accomplish in the moments we stop and share the hope of Jesus john 5:17.
- We read earlier that in Jesus’ day; disciples learnt how to ask the right questions to keep a conversation about God going. What are ways you can create opportunity to open a discussion about Jesus and what he’s done in your life? Or maybe its creating opportunity to invite others to church. Our Easter Production is coming up, let’s be thinking about who we can invite along!
- It can be easy to default to ‘that’s not really my gift’ or ‘I’m too nervous of what I might say or not say, or what they will think etc.’ Is it easy for you to share Gods love with people? Share a time you have shared with someone and how that went.
- What are ways you feel prompted to share? Sometimes it can be an inner urge, or an opportunity can come from being in conversation with someone. Are you confident every time or do you have to make a choice to step out? If so, how do you do this?
SERVE ALWAYS
Serving is simply being aware of how we can make the lives of others better. How can we add value to people and point them towards Gods best for them?
And it can look different in how that’s done for us all depending on our area of influence – a teacher serves by getting the best out of their students, businesspeople serve by leading teams well and reaching targets, mums and dads serve by being in the home raising children to a healthy, happy, and godly environment. Having a servant heart desires to see people at their best, despite what the cost, inconvenience or disruption to our own lives can sometimes be.
This is the model of living that Jesus showed us – with the ultimate act of serving by giving up his life so that we could have ours! 1john 3:16
Throughout scripture teaching and the writings of the gospels, we see that Jesus didn’t come to be served but to serve. And this is a heart revelation that God desires we would all live with – that we would willingly put others before ourselves, invite God to disrupt & interrupt our plans to see the lost and to be a shining light in the sphere of our influence.
- How does ‘serving others’ look like for you, & what are practical things you intentionally do to ‘serve’?
- How do you set serving at the forefront of your focus rather than an afterthought? If it is an afterthought, what needs to change to have it as a focus? Maybe it’s making time to serve, being aware of the need or asking God for the desire to serve and love others.
- A practical exercise you can do in your own time is write down the area of influence you have, or an area you feel called to and desire to have greater impact. Take a moment to pray and ask God to give you ideas, motivation, boldness to serve in those areas and write them down. Then, be intentional about not letting busyness, fear, pride, or insecurity keep you from actioning them out!
BE READY
We only ever have where we are now; so, the aim is to use each moment we have and not wait until we have more knowledge, better communication skills, or feel more confident etc… to share our faith. We need to recognise opportunity to share the hope of Jesus that we have experienced and be ready to step into the moment when it arrives!
The bible encourages us to be ready to give an account for our faith and what we believe, so in other words, we need to know and be ready to share our testimony with people, and our experience is so powerful because it’s our personal account of encountering Him, of His saving grace and the personal transforming that comes as we follow him. Maybe you already have your testimony ready to go or maybe you haven’t thought about it before! Wherever you find yourself, here are some tips to consider and help get you started!
- Make it a goal to be able to share your testimony in 90sec – 2mins
- Make 1/3 of what life was like before you encountered God, 1/3 about what changed in the moment you experienced God and 1/3 what’s happening in your life now because of it.
- Be authentic and honest about who Jesus is and what He’s done in your life.
- Don’t feel silly to practice out loud (in private! Hah) Try recording yourself on your phone and make sure what you’ve said is clear.
- Why not give it a go now and share each other’s testimonies in your group time together!
- Sharing your story isn’t about accomplishing a task; it’s about loving the person you are talking to – someone God loves and wants to be in a relationship with. Ask God to bring someone to your mind of who you can share your testimony with. Share with your group who comes to mind.
- Pray for each other that God would show you opportunities to share your story during the week, check in with each other at your next group and share what God has been doing through you!
